Whoever coined the term "basic black" clearly never laid eyes on Whitney Port and Lauren Conrad. Last night, the Hillzies-turned-designers both showed up to VH1 Divas in stunning sequined gowns, shimmying down the carpet and sparkling on stage next to former Idol judge (and the evening's show-stealing MC) Paula Abdul.

Check out what the stylish former costars wore to the star-studded event (whose gown do you like best??) plus, after the jump, see LC and Whit catching up backstage at the 2009 Video Music Awards!

It ain't easy being the new kid in town (or, in this case, The City), but Roxy Olin's determined to make her mark. The L.A. native, who first grabbed our attention back in July, showed up on Whitney Port's doorstep in the show's new trailer. And while we're looking forward to seeing more of her this fall (Roxy scored a job at People's Rev with Whit!), we're still not sure whether girl's a devoted pal -- or a total backstabber.
Since we've still got some time before Roxy's big City debut (new eps start Tuesday, Sept. 29 at 10:30pm), we thought we'd give her one more chance at a first impression. Forget all that shtuff in the trailer ('specially the part where Roxy kinda, sorta badmouths Whit to boss lady Kelly Cutrone) and check out what Whit's costar had to say for herself on the VMAs red carpet!

We already showed ya pics of Lauren Conrad, Stephanie Pratt and Kristin Cavallari struttin' their stuff on the VMAs red carpet. So where was King Spencer during the biggest photo op of the year? At home with the wifey, natch. But don't worry -- Spence still managed to start up tons o' controversy from his couch by live-blogging the show on Twitter.
Not only did dude join the zillions of Twitterati (and, um, sitting U.S. Presidents) in slamming Kanye West for hijacking the mic, but he also dissed Green Day, poked fun at Lil Mama's surprise cameo and taunted LC about having to watch K-Cav present during the show.
So what exactly DID the royal Pratt have to say 'bout all the awards show action? After the jump, check out a few of his best one-liners. Team Taylor, y'all!

It's not easy to go from casual wear to VMA glam. And since we loves us a good success story, we gave the Simmons sistahs (and, of course, Jess) a flip-cam to give y'all a behind-the-scenes look at their beautification process. Watch Angela, Vanessa and Jess scramble for the camera, show off their designer duds (Pastry, anyone??) and make their way down to Radio City. Then after the jump, hear the Daddy's Girls sound off about their sexy red carpet style.

Sunday night's VMAs were filled with some stellar entertainment, from Janet Jackson's MJ tribute to Jay-Z and Alicia Keys' spine-chilling performance of "Empire State Of Mind." And, oh yeah, who can forget Lil Mama jumping on stage like a metal head at a Motley Crue concert?
We hit up the remaining three crews in rehearsals today to ask about the moments that stood out to them most. Check out what everyone had to say:
In reference to Kanye West's abrupt interruption of Taylor Swift's acceptance speech, Massive Monkee Brysen Angeles commented, "As an artist you can't deny Kanye, but as a person ... what kind of person does that?" On the plus side, Brysen walked away from the VMAs a bigger fan of Beyonce Knowles, who later in the night stepped aside to allow Taylor her moment.
"[Lady Gaga] is too out there for me," We Are Heroes Ali Iannucci told us. "I feel like she's trying too hard." A nearby Hiroka Mcrae added, "Beyonce was my favorite! Every time they showed her, I got excited!" But Hiroka had a similar reaction as Ali to Lady Gaga -- apparently the gory performance gave her nightmares!
Finally, AfroBorike's Miguel A. Reyes Santiago only had eyes for Ms. Jackson. "Janet's performance was great. She really did an amazing job," he said in mid-rehearsal.
You Tell Us: What did you think was the most memorable moment of this year's VMAs?

You can't really blame "MTV Sunblock" host Adrienne Bailon for not recognizing Jason "Mayhem" Miller. Girl doesn't exactly strike us as the type who follows MMA fighting (or unwinds after a long, hard day by watching Bully Beatdown). So when her red carpet interview devolved into a discussion 'bout Mayhem's "doom streak," poor Adrienne damn near had a heart attack.
Watch the scary stylish wrestler's one-on-one with the former Cheetah Girl and somebody, PLEASE tell this chick not to worry. When he's outta the ring, Mayhem's a lover, not a fighter!

If ya wanna be fashion forward, ya gotta take the occasional risk. And City girl Whitney Port wasn't messing around when she showed up to the VMAs in a (semi) see-through number by Christopher Kane. And while the top was a last-min substitution -- apparently Whit had a pre-show "fashion malfunction" -- we think she ended up with a look that's sheer sexy. (Emphasis on the word "sheer.")
+ But what do you guys think: is Whitney's barely-there black too risque? Or just sizzlin' enough to spice things up? Hear what Whit had to say about her skin-baring shift dress, then take the poll and let us know whether she's got too much (or not enough!) goin' on.

It was no shocker that Jay-Z and Alicia Keys blew up the stage at last night's VMAs. It's what they do. He spit fire and her fingers inspired magic during their performance of "Empire State of Mind." In fact, ABDC judge Lil Mama felt so magical that she jumped on stage with the duo and struck a pose at the song's finish. Now that was a shocker.
Lil Mama's rep issued a statement of apology to MTV News earlier today -- cuz you know, stage-invasion only leads to next-day regret:
"I did not mean any disrespect towards Jay-Z or Alicia Keys," the statement read. "I admire them and look up to them as role models. "Empire State of Mind" had my emotions running high. In that moment I came up onstage to celebrate my two icons singing about NY."
Lil Mama's rep said she may have more to say about the situation later, and ABDC Insider will be checking in with her this week to ask for further comment. Stay tuned, and in the meantime, check out Mama's ??? State of Mind all over again in the video clip below:

The VMAs always bring out the biggest stars, and last night the Hillzies were there in droves, with everyone -- 'cept Speidi and Audrina Patridge -- getting in on the Radio City action.

And with everyone from LC to Stacie the Bartender on hand to witness Kanye's mic-snatching mo with Taylor Swift, the pre-show action was almost as sweet as Russell Brand's one-liners.
So what'd the Hills gals do (besides show off their most uh-MAZE-ing red carpet looks yet)? Well, for starters, Lauren Conrad chilled with Lo Bosworth backstage (and spent some QT with the Moonman) while her old pal Kristin Cavallari denied rumors that she scared 'Drina away from her presenting duties.

Check out these red carpet pix of our gals looking gorge, plus get a glimpse of Stephanie's 10-inch heels(!), hear K-Cav's pre-show predictions (she's Team 'Ye, y'all) and watch Kristin present the Best Pop Video Award with a lil help from Nelly Furtado!

No, you're not seeing things. That really is Jim "I Have No Pelvis" DeChamp sans bicycle and lifelong tomboy Jolene Van Vugt in sexy turquoise taffeta. Turns out, all it takes is an awards show (in last night's case, the VMAs), some fancy, non-bloodstained duds and a good orthopedist to get these two human crash test dummies lookin' damn near stylish. So soak it up while you can, folks. Cuz the next time you see these guys, they're gonna be covered in mud, sweat and Streetbike Tommy's body odor. Anyone else countin' down the days 'til Thursday night?
