It's been a full year since Real World: Brooklyn's Ryan was called back to active duty in Iraq. For us, time has flown. It seems like just yesterday that we were interviewing the aspiring writer and filmmaker at the taping of the Brooklyn reunion. (The military allowed Ryan a 24-hour leave from training camp in order to shoot the show in New York City.)
For him, time has moved less quickly. Being an American soldier in Iraq -- for the second time -- can wear on a person.
Now, Ryan is approaching the finish line of his final Middle East tour (he comes home in January) -- and as our country celebrated Veterans Day, we sat down with him this morning via Skype to commend his bravery and ask some personal questions about life overseas. Check out his video message to those of you who watched tonight's Return to Duty special, then click here for our full interview with Sergeant Conklin.
Bonus Clip: Ryan did his first tour of duty in 2006, when the situation in Iraq was much more dire than it is today. After the jump, hear Ryan explain how some of his fears were put to rest this second time around.

Soldier-turned-civilian Ryan Conklin was kicking back in the Real World: Brooklyn house when he received word that he'd be heading back to Iraq for a second tour of duty. That life-changing moment (captured by the MTV camera crews) forced Ryan to put his plans for the future on hold and answer the call of duty, and by the time the RW episode had aired (in late March of 2009), he'd already shipped out for basic training in Campy Shelby, Miss.
Now working as a patrol gunner in Baghdad, Ryan invited the MTV cameras along to document his journey as an American soldier in Iraq. Take a sneak peek at Real World Presents: Return To Duty and catch its premiere on Veterans Day (Wednesday, Nov. 11) at 9pm.
+ Learn more about Ryan's story by checking out the Return To Duty site, plus take another look at the phone call on Real World: Brooklyn that turned Ryan's world upside down.

If you recall, MTV's last season of Real World was chock full of lotsa heavy plotlines: Ryan got called back to war, Sarah got phone-stalked by her estranged father, Katelynn revealed that she was born with boy parts... The show definitely didn't follow its usual booze/threesomes/blackouts formula, and many of you were totally down with the change. "Refreshing" was one of the words used to describe the Brooklyn season.
Still, some of you really longed for times past (e.g. Hollywood and Denver), with all the hootin, hollerin' and meaningless hookups -- and for those of you who fall into this category, rest assured that Real World: Cancun (premieres June 24 at 10pm) promises a return to the good ole days of STD scares and peeing in public. Yay for you!
So. We wanna know just how many of you are psyched to see the Real Worlders back in their thong bikinis/birthday suits, and how many will miss the more subdued vibes of the Brooklyn house? Take the poll and tell us whether you prefer your weekly dose of the Real World served with or without the nekkid keg stands.
Spirits were high among the Real World roommates when seven of them swung by the MTV studio two weeks ago to film their reunion special. Still, a bittersweet vibe that something -- or more pointedly, someone -- was missing seemed to permeate each interview we conducted with the cast. Their eighth roommate and dear friend, Ryan, couldn't make the taping because he was in the thick of training for his upcoming Iraq tour. Or so everyone thought...
What none of them knew before showtime was that Ryan had been secretly hanging out (playing Rock Band!) on the 23rd floor of our building, waiting anxiously to surprise everyone on stage with his military presence. MTV successfully kept it under wraps that Ryan was given special permission from The Army to say his final goodbyes in person. And while the minutes until his big reveal ticked away, we took the opportunity to ask Ryan some final questions about his impending trip back to the Middle East. Watch the video to see where his head and heart were at 15 days before deployment.

Not quite ready to say farewell to the Real World: Brooklyn roomies? Well, they're gonna miss you, too. Luckily, there's this cool new thing called The Internet where you can keep in touch with people all around the world .. without having to buy stamps! Neat, right?
Watch the video below to hear the cast members share their gratitude, then find out how you can become virtual friends with each of them!
You know all those crazy, drunken brawls that characterized Real World Seasons 1-20? Well, unless you count JD's one-man coffee table rampage, we haven't seen that kinda violence here in Brooklyn. At least, not until now. Peep these scenes from next week's RW: BK finale, and watch as Ryan and a bunch of drunkos start wildin' out at the gang's last-ever group outing!
Bonus: If the fighting gets TOO intense, the girls (and Chet) can always hide behind Scott -- and use his abs of steel as a Human Shield.

Sure, all the Real World opening credits begin the same way. But it's not all about glamor shots of the casties, fast-moving establishing shots and classic-but-cliched voice-overs. Turns out, the 25-second Brooklyn intro is thoughtful, nuanced and full of carefully layered audio and wink-wink moments between the cast and crew.
Get clued in by checking out the producers' blog and find out everything you never knew about the BK opening credits. Then channel your inner filmmakers (a la Ryan) and mashup your own vershe of the intro sequence! (Oh, and did we mention the best mashup entries will be featured on MTV.com?? Hey-o!)
This week on the Real World: Boobs!
But first, we saw the gang cope with the unfortunate news that Ryan's been recalled to Iraq. (We wish you the best, buddy!) So in order to get his mind off the potential danger and destruction he'll face during wartime, the roomies decided to take Ryan to Atlantic City where he can face good ole Made-in-America danger and and destruction!
Chet, being the good Mormon that he is, spent time at the craps table gambling before he stripped a naked woman of her bed covers. And even though the episode was pretty heavy, my heart burst when I scoped the PUPPY MONTAGE! Best Real World EVER! I can't wait till next week when they finally introduce the Puppy Confessional.
That's it for this week's Detox but be sure to tune in on Thursday when I talk about Making The Band and my new favorite MTV show, Taking the Stage!

Real World: Brooklyn airs Wednesdays at 10pm, but you don’t have to wait ’til then to check out the raw footage. Every day, I’ll be sifting through the ‘Real World Dailies‘ to make sure you’re getting your fill of the BK roomies. (Tough job, I know, but somebody’s gotta do it!)
We know what you're thinking and no, it's not that dude who owns the Fairway Supermarket (and made Chet's cardboard cutout). Nope, the latest (and possibly greatest) Real World-er loves long walks on the beach, hates cats and is sure to get more airtime than Baya. So who is this marvelous creature? That would be Devyn's brand-new (purse-sized) puppy dog, Brooklyn!
Watch as the proud pet owner shows Sarah her furry, four-legged friend, then check out Ryan's reaction to Devyn's cute canine accessory.
