We pulled out the big guns when we brought former Beat Freak (and Week 7 veteran) Maryss from Paris back to give us a one-of-a-kind backstage tour. Watch as Maryss chats up the final three crews on the eve of battle, and hear what used to get the heart of this freak beating fast back in her Dance Crew days ...
Last year, Quest Crew, delivered one of the most memorable performances in ABDC history during the Last Chance Challenge. It can even be argued that their cinematic, piano-inspired routine helped propel them to victory over the Beat Freaks, who -- up until the next-to-last episode -- were heavily favored to win. So how important is this week's competition for We Are Heroes?
"For America and ABDC, it's about putting on a show and entertaining," WAH's Riquel Olander told us shortly before taping. "We decided to go out there tonight and do us, but do us in a way that is still going to entertain. We know people in both top two crews from last season and we've had the chance to ask what they would -- and wouldn't -- do differently, so we're going to take their advice to heart."
That said, it's been a tough week for everyone so far. All the crews have been burning the midnight oil, hoping to lock in the win -- and learn two lengthy routines, although WAH still promises to deliver a killer set.
"As tired as we are and as sick as we are, we just have to follow through with a strong performance and not just give a dance show," Riquel declared.
And while the Heroes are looking to give audiences the show of their lives, they're not ready to hang up their dancing shoes just yet. "We wanna follow in Quest's footsteps," Riquel told us. "[W]e want to win the show."
It's quickly creepin' up on us. In just two weeks, a Season Four champion of ABDC will be crowned! Man, seems like just yesterday Season One's JabbaWockeeZ were blowin' us away with their awesome isolations. Still, the Jabbas had three other tough crews to top at this point in the competition, and that got us thinking ...
The current remaining crews are extremely different from one another, showing us the full spectrum of dance moves and making the competition that much more tough to judge. But are they the most talented final four from all seasons? Take the poll and tell us: Which group of dancers brought the game to its highest level?
Season 1 Final Four Crews JabbaWockeez, Status Quo, Kaba Modern, BreakSk8
Season 2 Final Four Crews Super Cr3w, SoReal Cru, Fanny Pak, Boogie Bots
Season 3 Final Four Crews Quest Crew, Beat Freaks, Fly Khicks, Strikers All-Stars
Season 4 Final Four Crews AfroBorike, Massive Monkees, Rhythm City, We Are Heroes
Seated in opposite sections during Tuesday night's taping of ABDC were members of Quest Crew and Beat Freaks, last season's final two crews. And during the pre-show warmup, both Hok and Rino succumbed to requests for them to get into a spur-of-the-moment dance-off -- only instead of their skills being judged, it was the audience put the test this time!
Both ABDC alumni playfully tried to pump up their respective bleachers by dancing for the audience and *attempting* to have them replicate their moves. And the fun didn't stop there. Towards the end of the taping, Shorty got on stage and displayed her signature head spins, to which the boys of Quest Crew delivered mad applause.
In anticipation of MTV's Aug. 2 ABDCspecial -- Top 10 Performances of All Time -- we here in dot-com-land spent the past week fishing through old episodes of Season 1 through 3 ... And we gots to say (a la Lil Mama style), this show really knows how to bring it! So many twists and turns (literally), you never quite know for sure what'll be the outcome of the final competition -- and in appreciation of that fact, we've put together our own countdown of 'Top 5 Game-Changing Moments.' From Super Cr3w's stunt-heavy Ninja performance to the JabbaWockeeZ' illuminating Michael Jackson Challenge, watching parts of these routines has us completely pumped for the Aug. 9 season premiere of America's Best Dance Crew. (We're betting you're also pretty psyched.)
Check out the our Top 5 video below and sound off about whether you agree with our picks!
BONUS: Check back next Friday for another one of our video countdowns: 'Top 5 Moments Of Lil Mama ... Being Lil Mama.'
All week long Remote Control will be posting reactions to Michael Jackson's death from select ABDCrews. Check out Rino from Beat Freaks's stunned response below...
I'm still in denial about what happened to Michael. I don't even know how to begin expressing my thoughts since he's been the biggest inspiration to me, ever. He really influenced who I am today. All I can do is pray for his soul and his family, friends and all the Michael fans that have been effected by this news.
On Thursday afternoon, Maryss and I were teaching class and playing Michael's songs as our warm up because there was a slight chance of us going to check out his rehearsal later that night. After our class, the rest of Beat Freaks gave us the news.
We couldn't believe it, didn't feel it. I thought it was another bad rumor, yet all my friends kept texting and calling me about the news. We had to do something, so we went to his parents' house to show some love, respect and support. When I got home, the media was forcing me to face the fact that he was gone. I couldn't sleep. I just kept watching Michael's videos on MTV. I was very emotional and kept thinking about how he's been there all my life. Read more...
Ringmasters got bit hard by the Hollywood bug during their time on ABDC and have since packed up their bags and started the big move from New York to Cali.
When I spoke with Nugget about this new development, he told me that "Back in Brooklyn, it was cool to be recognized on the streets, but that's not what we care about. We want to keep performing and dancing -- we want to entertain."
So what are all these guys planning to do about room and board? "We're gonna be staying with Beat Freaks for a little until we figure things out," Reggie confided in me at the wrap party Thursday night. Proof positive that the love between these crews is quite real!
What's more, Lindsey Blaufarb a.k.a. Outthere (Beat Freaks) called in a favor and got the boys an audition for Step Up 3, which will be filming in New York. "We know where they come from and we want them to be extremely successful," she told me.
We wish both Ringmasters and Beat Freaks the same continued success and hope to see some bone-breakin' in the upcoming dance film!
In past seasons of ABDC, there's been high drama surrounding the final two crews -- but there's a first for everything, and fans seemed to be in agreement this time around that the best dancers squared off in the end. (Phew!)
Last night, as Quest Crew and Beat Freaksdelivered their final dance together, everyone in the audience appeared to be thinking the same thing: "Just get to the gawd damn results already!" You could feel a collective heart-pound from both squads as Mario Lopez teased us with his long, drawn-out announcement. Of course, both crews wanted it so badly, but it was Quest who ultimately stole the glory, as well as the $100,000 prize money and official title of 'America's Best Dance Crew.' What an exciting night!
So ... we wanna know: Did America get it right, or will there be another wave of haters who say the show was rigged? (That excuse is really getting old BTW.)
All the dancers are back in Los Angeles for the ABDCLive Finale this Thursday night -- and each of the seven crews who were previously eliminated are very much looking forward to this special shot at redemption. One more chance to take the Dance Crew stage and show off their stuff for America!
This year the judges chose how the crews would be grouped for the final dance numbers. Here's what you can expect to see and hear:
Performing to "Just Dance" by Lady Gaga
* Boxcuttuhz
* Beat Freaks
* Team Millennia
Performing to "Right Round" by Flo Rida
* Dynamic Edition
* Strikers All-Stars
* Quest Crew
Performing to "Numba One (Tide is High)" by Kardinal Offishall ft. Keri Hilson
* Fly Khicks
* G.O.P.
* Ringmasters
Sometimes when you wanna get the dirt, you gotta film in dirty places. So just by awkwardly hanging around the Port-A-Potties behind Stage 29, we uncovered a few mysteries that have been plaguing the ABDC set:
++ Just how did bronchitis spread between Quest Crew and Beat Freaks?
++ Who has a crush on who? (Hint: There's an animal involved.)
++ How did Victor get in trouble with his girlfriend? (We mean no harm, Vic, we swear. Kinda.)
And so much more... Check out all the gritty details in the vid below!
