In response to some online feedback questioning why 16 and Pregnant's Whitney did not breastfeed Owen, she's written the following response to clear up any misconceptions...
What some of you may not know is that I actually did breastfeed -- I just didn't feel comfortable breastfeeding on camera.
Breastfeeding is great for mothers. You would not believe the incredible bond it gives you with your newborn. I breastfed until Owen was two months old but had to stop when we were making trips to the hospital and the doctors were trying to figure out why he was sick. They encouraged me to stop breastfeeding so they could put him on a formula called Elacare, which was supposed to be better for his stomach.
When the doctors found out that Owen had a liver disorder, they said it had nothing to do with the breast milk or formula. But my milk had already begun to dry since it had been over two weeks since I could breastfeed.
I encourage breastfeeding. It takes LOTS of commitment and it's not for everyone I guess. But props to Ebony for trying -- just two weeks of it is better then none. So my advice if you are pregnant or trying to get pregnant is to consider breastfeeding because it's something that only YOU can give your baby, and it's great for them. Thanks =]
