Mac Miller‘s a proud born-and-bred Pittsburgh native (note the Steelers sweatband he’s sporting), so why did he leave his beloved hometown for the Hollywood Hills? In this week’s “Most DopeRough Cut, the rapper says it’s because the scene in L.A. has become a hot spot for the best artists in hip-hop. For a relatively new artist like Mac, making the move to California was a no-brainer, especially if he wanted to grow and improve his own skills in the biz.

“I think everyone that is the most important people in hip-hop, right now, are out here,” Mac tells an interviewer in the clip. He then explains how being on his own in a new city helped him mature, both as a person and in his music.”L.A. was, like, me stepping out and being like, ‘Okay, I’m in control of my own life,’” he says. “My mom’s not there if I get in trouble.” Having to fend for himself may have helped Mac gain a sense of independence, but it seems no amount of time away from home will help him with his toughest life decision to date: picking the proper pooch. You’ll find your furry companion one day, dude.
