While most high school sophomores are worrying about acing their PSATs or making sure their retainer is food-free before talking to their crush, one 15-year-old is floating on Cloud 9. Maybe even higher than that, if all goes according to plan.

When Abigail Harrison was in 7th grade, she set up a Twitter account for a history class project so she could use it to communicate with some of her heroes. For most kids, this would entail tweeting marriage proposals at the Biebs, but for Abby, it meant connecting with NASA employees, astronauts and fellow space enthusiasts.

A year later, in an amazing coincidence, Abby ran into one of those heroes, astronaut Luca Parmitano, at a Florida airport, and the two got to talking. When Luca realized how bad-ass Abigail already was at an age when most people can’t even legally drive a car, he agreed to become her mentor, and after he was chosen to be an engineer on the International Space Station, he picked Abby as his earth liaison. So what exactly does that entail? It means she’ll be his constant contact while he’s in space, as well as his date for the launch party in Russia. Take that, prom!

While Abby’s hopes have more than come true for now, she has her heart set on exploring space, herself, one day. Her goal is to be the first astronaut on Mars, and if anyone’s going to make it happen, we’ll put our money on the 15-year-old who already has her foot in the door at NASA. Wouldn’t you?
