The “Smart Guy” cast.
“Smart Guy” made its MTV2 debut last weekend, and a ton of you guys tuned in to get your nostalgia fix. As a token of our gratitude, we’ve decided to bring you up to speed on where the cast of the ’90s staple is today, because, although we’d love to still think of Tahj Mowry as an adorably-dimpled boy genius, the truth is that the show wrapped almost FOURTEEN years ago, and a lot has changed since then! Take a look at what the Henderson family has been up to, IRL.
Tahj Mowry in 1999 and 2013.
Since the ’90s, Tahj (who played T.J. a.k.a. the “Smart Guy”) has had continued success in his entertainment career. His acting took a backseat to music for a bit, though, and in 2010, he released a song with rapper Flo Rida called “Kick It Out.” Since then, Tahj has returned to his acting roots, and is currently starring in the ABC Family show, “Baby Daddy.”
John Marshall Jones in 1999 and present day.
John Marshall Jones
Best known as Floyd Henderson, the sweet but stern single father on “Smart Guy,” John’s acting career continues to flourish on TV. From playing the principal on ABC Family’s smash hit “Pretty Little Liars,” to his supporting role on the CW’s medical drama, “Hart of Dixie,” this seasoned actor shows no signs of slowing down.
Jason Weaver on the “Smart Guy” set and a recent personal photo.
Most remember Jason as Marcus Henderson, T.J.’s charming older brother with the soulful voice. In 2003, Weaver made a smooth transition to music, and stretched his vocals in Chingy‘s chart-topping hit, “One Call Away.” Since then, he, like Tahj, has returned to acting with a few independent films, and loves to keep in touch with fans on Twitter. “Thanks 2 every1 hittin me up 2 let me know they’re checkin out Smart Guy on @MTV2!” he tweeted last Saturday. “I’m so glad y’all enjoy that show! Thanks guys!!”
Essence Atkins in 1999, and in 2013, at the premiere for “A Haunted House.”
The lone lady in an all-male cast, Essence played T.J.’s older sister, Yvette Henderson. She remains a working actress to this day, and over the years, has starred on the TBS show, “Are We There Yet?” She most recently appeared in the scary movie, “A Haunted House“; however, Essence took on her biggest and most important role a few years back — being a mom!

Omar in 2000, and on set of “Miami Medical” in 2009.
Omar, known as Marcus’ BFF Mo on the series, has had a few acting stints in shows like “Grey’s Anatomy” and VH1’s “Single Ladies” since his time on “Smart Guy.” Oh, and wouldn’t ya know it: He’s the baby brother of Oscar-winning actor Cuba Gooding Jr.! In case you were wondering.
