VJs Of Yesteryear Plot To Take Back MTV In ‘Portlandia’

Kurt Loder’s ready for his closeup at the “Portlandia” Season 3 premiere screening in New York City.

This is not 1988, and Poison’s “Every Rose Has Its Thorn” is still safely confined to radio archives (uh, and Brett Michaels’ “Rock of Love” repeats), but Kurt Loder, Tabitha Soren and other MTV VJs famous for their coverage of grunge and electric guitar-heavy power ballads are back at it! IFC’s “Portlandia” recently saw a reunion among our network’s most iconic reporters, and when the show’s third season premieres on January 4, it will feature a sketch where Kurt and Co. take part in a plot to reclaim their own stomping grounds. “MTV headquarters was invaded by a band of music liberation people,” Loder will say in his famous serious tone, according to New York Magazine’s Vulture.

Between takes, Loder and Soren reminisced about what it was like to revisit their old VJ roles (at least fictionally) after all these years. “It’s cute that they would want to [show us taking back MTV],” Soren told Vulture. But don’t expect them to act cute. Fueled by his discontent of modern music culture, Loder will pop a Millenial’s gum-bubble en route to his coup. He always did scare the hell out of us.

+ Check out the full interview here, and tune in to IFC on January 4 at 10/9c for some good ol’ fashioned nostalgia!
