It wasn't long ago that Jenna lamented her knack for bad timing, and all we can say after tonight's "Awkward" is: like daughter, like mother. Just as Lacey finally began to earn back Jenna's trust after being revealed as the "Carefrontation" letter's author, a certain person's blog was leaked to the public, and Lacey was outed as a monster to everyone who didn't know the whole story. She put on a strong front, but after spending a day deflecting calls from furious parents and coping with Val's cold shoulder, the young mother broke down, and finally explained to Jenna why she did what she did.
It turns out, Lacey's mother wasn't so kind, and later, we learned that Kevin wasn't always such a great support system, either. When Jenna was a baby, Lacey spent a lot of time treading water on her own, and she confessed that her knees finally buckled the day she wrote the letter to Jenna, and she projected the negativity hurled by her mother onto her own daughter. Suddenly, Jenna understood her mother's demons. Unfortunately, nobody else in Palos Hills had the same clarity, and shouts of "Bitch!" across the high school parking lot seemed likely to continue for as long as Lacey drove Jenna to campus.
