Sorting through 28 episodes of “The Hills“‘ third season was a tall task (that required two posts!), but if there’s one thing we learned as Lauren Conrad‘s journey through life as an Angeleno continued, it’s that the early 20s certainly ain’t boring. And in 2008, more proof came, as we saw the stories of Audrina, Whitney and Heidi unfold even more closely. When a friendship could burn just as easily as couture, though, it was clear none were guaranteed happy endings.
Check out what happened the year Whitney finally severed ties with Teen Vogue and a changed-for-the-better Stephanie Pratt still couldn’t seem to escape the line of fire. This, folks, is Retro Mania at its finest:
I Hope You Kept The Receipt: When Lauren finally touched down in Paris with Whitney by her side, it was every bit the dream she hoped it would be. And while nights out in the City of Lights and lavish upper-crust cocktail parties seemed like the stuff of a fairy tale, the trip quickly devolved into a horror movie when Lauren noticed a designer dress she’d been loaned got burned by a curling iron. Lauren was panicked as she surveyed the damage, but Whitney kept her cool, managed to convince the designer the mark was a preexisting stain and got her girl to the big ball in a beautiful new dress.
The Devil Wears…A Lot Of Black: After putting in years of work for Teen Vogue, Whitney finally realized her fashion world-passions leaned more toward styling, and when an opportunity popped up at People’s Revolution, the occasional model jumped on it with Lisa Love’s blessing. Whitney was confident, but got knocked on her ass at the interview as Kelly Cutrone told her she was “making a deal with the devil.” The two ultimately became good friends, and Kelly eventually helped Whit jump-start her own line, but seeing the leggy blonde shaking in her boots was some solid entertainment.
Spencer Spits Venom At Stephanie: Somehow, after Stephanie Pratt absolutely demoralized Lauren while out at a club one night, the two fashioned their discord into a friendship, and LC even invited She-Pratt to her birthday bash. Unfortunately, Stephanie’s party favor came in the form of a tongue-lashing from Spencer, who made his sister cry by questioning her family loyalty. For the first time, we saw how kind-hearted Stephanie could be as she fought to mend fences between Lauren and Heidi, but her relationship with Spencer went nowhere but south as consequence.
A Sour Shot: The tail-end of Season 3 saw Heidi and Spencer’s relationship suffer more intensely than it ever had, and the two ultimately decided to split up for awhile when they couldn’t seem to make things work. But when Spencer consciously tried to make his back-and-forth fiance jealous one night by literally flirting with girls behind her back, Ms. Montag looked ready to take down a bull. “They’re taking shots?!” Heids infamously shouted as Stephanie gave her the play-by-play. Spence, you’re about to get rained on, dude.
A Guest House Divided: When Lauren noticed she and Audrina were drifting apart after the two moved into a big house with Lo, she confronted her lone brunette friend, whose bedroom was in a separate cottage across the backyard. Lauren got teary when Audrina blamed the distance on Lo, who ‘Drina said was responsible for driving a big ol’ wedge between ‘em, but Lauren said she wasn’t one to let people speak for her, and it wasn’t clear if the two would ever be good buddies again.
