Of all the relationships that have helped shaped my self-confidence and body image, there is one that sticks out to me the most, and it's the one I have with my mother.

As a girl who has struggled with my weight throughout my entire life--much like Gabriella in the premiere of “I Used to Be Fat”--I can say that my mother’s influence has been absolutely crucial. In fact, I truly believe that the way any mother goes about supporting her daughter can make or break the weight-loss experience.

Gabriella’s mother, unlike mine, put pressure on her to be perfect, which must have made it that much more difficult for Gabriella to take on the mission of losing 90 pounds in one summer. My mother always supported my endeavors to lose weight and live a healthy lifestyle because that’s what I wanted, and that’s what I knew would make me happier.

The challenges Gabriella encountered with food in her own home reminded me of my own. Gabriella, her mother and her trainer, Katie, discussed how difficult it is for Gabriella to live in an environment laden with temptation--temptation purposely put there by her mother as a test. Luckily throughout my weight loss efforts, whenever I asked my mother to not buy tempting goodies she obliged. Unlike Gabriella’s mother, who appeared to constantly be setting her up to fail, my mom agreed to buy the snacks that would help me reach my goals while suiting the needs of the rest of my family.

I admit that in my struggle, I am and always have been my own worst enemy. My mother has always been my personal cheerleader, and it's made such a difference in the way I view my body, and in my struggle to maintain a healthy weight. Had my mother ever expressed a view that I needed to lose weight, I think it would have completely undermined my personal motivation. I would have been harder on myself, become even more of my own worst enemy. If my mother didn’t believe in me, why would I ever believe in myself?

At the end of the episode, when Gabriella had succeeded on her own, her mom came around and offered her full support. To some of you it may have seemed too little, too late. But not to Gabriella, and not to me. We both understand the importance of having your mom behind you, even if it takes time to get there. And with a mom's support, whenever and however it comes, any girl can do anything she wants. Especially if what she wants is to be “fierce, fit and fabulous.”

Her "cheeseburger days" are over, but Gabriella remembers every last bit of self-control and will that went into kissing them good-bye. We followed up with the "I Used to Be Fat" all-star this week to see if she's maintained her weight loss and to find out how her life has (and hasn't) changed since losing 90 pounds over the summer. In her vlog below, Gabriella explains that she's found the happiness she was always looking for, yet it's still taking time to adjust to the dramatic change in her appearance. "Sometimes I still feel like the 253 pound girl," she says. She wants everyone to know that "losing weight is hard, and you have to surround yourself with good people." Check out her entire update here:

Tonight's season premiere of "I Used To Be Fat" showcased one of the most dramatic weight-loss stories we've ever seen. Gabriella, an articulate and incredibly self-aware high school student, struggled--both physically and mentally--to find the strength to change her unhealthy eating and exercise habits. At times, her mother's criticism set her back and Gabi felt like she was alone on her fitness journey, but she ultimately pushed through and lost 90 pounds!

+ How did you feel about Gabriella's relationship with her mom? Was Arleen too hard on her, or was she just trying to encourage her daughter to stay on top of her responsibilities? Take the poll, then sound off in the comments!

Happen to find yourself humming along to the "I Used to Be Fat" theme song? Maybe that's because it's pretty awesome. The artist behind the tune, Ian Axel, celebrates relationships, personal transformation and fresh starts in his debut album, This Is the New Year (drops 2/15/11). The relatable nature of his lyrics is a testament to the purity of where they spring from. Below, check out Axel's personal story of losing weight and gaining self-confidence, and learn more about his music here.

When I was a kid, I was one foot taller and wider then anyone else in my class. People called me "triple fat goose," "bowling-ball head" and even "Axel snacks" because of all the junk food I'd eat for lunch. I had few friends--I mostly traded basketball cards with my next-door neighbor who was four years younger than me. I never took my shirt off at the pool and dressed in layers because I was ashamed of my body. I basically surrendered and became the person my classmates labeled me as--I figured being overweight was just something I was going to have to live with, it was who I was. But what you don't know in grade school, specifically high school, is that life has hardly just begun.

Beyond school is a world where it doesn't really matter what you look like. While people may still be cruel, you are not forced to spend your time with them every day, which makes things a lot easier. As I got older, what I began to realize was that there were actually people out there who loved me for me, and I could surround myself with just them. For once in my life, it was OK that I wanted to feel good about me, about the things that I did, and how I looked and treated my body.

I began to exercise and eat right. I had more energy, began to wear T-shirts and just felt great overall. The more I could love myself, the more I could share that love with others. And so I began to sing at 20 years old. It was my dream to sing my own songs for people, and here I am now, singing professionally.

We all have this light in us...a truth that is so beautiful and unique to just us. It doesn't matter what anyone else thinks or says, they can't take it away from you. Know that it is never too late to live the life you dream. But also, being good to yourself is a commitment. It requires balance, and I truly believe it starts with the way you treat your body. The good news is that once you start, it's pretty hard to go back!

Based on the AWESOME new trailer, "Jersey Shore" madness won't be dying down anytime soon (or in the next decade). And because we're really sick of reading/writing 'Best/Worst of 2010' features (why dwell on the past?), today we're making a wish list of things we'd like to see happen in 2011. Here are 7 of 'em, and feel free to add your own in the comments!

1. Mike "The Situation" makes a press announcement that he's legally changing his birth name to "Here's".

2. Pauly D auctions off his blowout at Sotheby's for an undisclosed amount of cash. The buyer is rumored to be Rupert Everett.

3. JWOWW's Filthy Couture clothing line finally hits stores, as fathers of 16-year-old girls across the world cling to their credit cards.

4. Ronnie and Sammi get couple's counseling--or break up. This ancient Chinese proverb said it best: If you love something, set it free. If it comes back to you, it's yours. If it doesn't, it never was.

5. The audio version of Snooki's novel, "A Shore Thing," makes the bestseller list.

6. MTV greenlights Pauly's spinoff!

7. Angelina Pivarnick and Vinny Guadagnino are caught by TMZ after months of hooking up in secret. (Their meeting place was the Staten Island Dump.)

The characters in MTV's new scripted series, "Skins," are a provocative bunch, and they've got the edgy (read: lacy, sheer, poorly fitted) fashions to match. We can't imagine it's a coincidence that the show's promotional photos bear a striking resemblance to the oft racy photography of hipster style haven American Apparel. Thing is, we can barely tell the difference between the American Apparel clothing models and "Skins" cast--can you? Take a look at the side-by-side shots below and try and figure out which is which. (Answers after the jump!)

It's been a while since we've heard an update on Avril Lavigne and Brody Jenner's relationship status, but lo and behold, the (rather odd) couple was spotted yesterday at LAX, surfboards in tow, as they prepared to board a flight to Hawaii with Jenner's mom.

Who woulda thunk these opposites would ever attract, not to mention stay together throughout the course of nearly one year? Not us, but then again, we never quite understood why Brody and Jayde Nicole lasted as long as they did. Here's to unpredictable pairs everywhere--may you continue to intrigue us with half-assed airport disguises (see above) and mushy tweets!

Ever since we went live with the "Jersey Shore" trailer, there've been lots of comments from the show's fans wondering if this "new Deena girl" will wreck the close dynamic between the housemates. Oh, you people really like to panic, dontcha?

For the record, nothing like that's gonna happen--if anything, you'll see Deena bringing everybody together with her spunky 'tude and brilliant wingman abilities. Take a look for yourself in this exclusive sneak peek from the gang's second Seaside Heights tour, in which MVP applaud their roomie for not being a co** block, like some people...

'Tis the season of giving, and over Xmas Pauly D Claus made sure his parents know how much he appreciates them by passing around some extravagant gifts. According to TooFab.com, not only did the standout "Jersey Shore" star present his ma with a boatload of Louis Vuitton purses, but his dad received a 3-D flat-screen TV and gift certificates to his favorite restaurants. Pal Vinny Guadagnino also went the gift certificate route, signing up his pa for some free meals at a New York City eatery, as well as some quality time with His Truly since Vin's always off doing famous person stuff (and getting trashed with his costars).

It sure is nice to hear that the guys are sharing the sudden wealth with their (real) family. Wonder if we can snag some presents from the return pile during their visit to the office next week!

We've been waiting far too long for Liz Lee to swoop back into our lives. The good news is that there's only a little over a month to go until Season 2 of "My Life as Liz" premieres on MTV (tune in Feb. 8 at 11/10c!). The bad news is that...actually, there really is no bad news. Liz is just as awesome as she ever was, especially now that she's moved her skinny, "Star Wars"-loving butt out of Texas and planted herself smack-dab in the middle of the geek-chic mecca of Brooklyn, New York. Below, check out the trailer for the new season, in which our sassy heroine's longtime love, Bryson, is still playing ping-pong with her heart--except now he's up against a (very attractive and self-assured) suitor who knows exactly what he wants, and that's Liz Lee. Hell-ohhh love triangle, we're always glad to have ya around!
