So much was revealed by the students featured on tonight's premiere of "If You Really Knew Me," particularly by Leikin, a teen known for her happy-go-lucky demeanor. As you saw with just about everyone involved in Challenge Day, there's more to Leikin than she normally lets on. We reached out to her earlier today to find out how her perceptions and actions have changed since filming the show. Check out her hot-off-the-press blog post, as well as a video clip she shot of herself the morning after Challenge Day.
Challenge Day was the most remarkable experience I have yet to encounter in my life. I felt a connection to this world that cannot be described. I speak with every ounce of confidence when I say that this program changed me for the better.
Throughout my experience, I was encouraged, supported, and most important, loved. Prior to Challenge Day, I felt as though I had a generally good outlook on life. I was outgoing, kind and open-minded -- so I was lacking the belief that Challenge Day could actually change me. I look back now with complete shock at how naive I was.
Challenge Day provided me with an entirely new perspective on things I hope I can pass along. First and foremost, ALWAYS remember that you do not know what type of home somebody comes from. You do not know about their family, their friends, how their morning went. You know nothing about them except for your definition of their outward appearance. Judging is human nature, but what counts is whether or not you hold that person accountable for your personal impression of them.
I encourage everyone out there to look beyond what you see and get to know a person. Get to know their heart, and I guarantee you will see the miraculous and beautiful qualities they possess. Take the extra step; instead of just smiling at a stranger as they pass by, get to know their name ... and then say their name with a smile.
I hope that when people watch the show, they will take a lesson from it, whether that lesson be from Barbra, or Trevor, or Travis or myself. I thoroughly believe that Challenge Day could change the world. All it takes is for the participants or observers to stand up against prejudiced accusations and be the voice of what is right. Be the voice for someone who maybe can't be the voice for themselves. Be the voice for those who are treated unfairly because of their color, sexual orientation, outward appearance or even just the clique they are associated with. And most important, be the voice for yourself. Don't ever let someone bring you down because they judge you. Use their false judgments to motivate yourself to prove them wrong. And when you feel that no one believes in you, know that I believe in you. I believe that every individual is unique for a reason.
Challenge Day gave me confidence I never dreamed of. I am so very thankful that I had the opportunity to participate in this very positive and honest program.
Sincerely,
Leikin Poppino
