On tonight's episode of "True Life: I Hate My Face," we watched two young women suffering from distorted perceptions of themselves. Body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) goes far beyond what the average image-consumed person does to conceal their "flaws," and as a country, we've become slightly desensitized to body-altering procedures, particularly in Hollywood.
At the 2002 Golden Globes, Kate Hudson was proud of her cup size, claiming, "I have small breasts, obviously ... it's nice to be able to wear a plunging neckline and have it be elegant." But according to Usmagazine.com, she’s changed her mind. Recent photos showed the 31-year-old actress sporting a fuller chest.
So who else has helped make body augmentation so ubiquitous? Let's take a look at some famous plastic surgery nightmares and botched botulism from the past.
Jocelyn "The Catwoman" Wildenstein (below, left)
A socialite who intentionally went under the knife to resemble a cat in an attempt to keep her then-husband from leaving her.
Hang Mioku
You might not recall the name, but the story should ring a bell. This plastic surgery junkie had to have 2.1 ounces of self-injected cooking oil removed from her face and neck.
Bruce Jenner (below, middle)
After being ridiculed for his flawed face-lift from 25 years ago, Jenner finally went in for a very public corrective surgery.
Tara Reid (below, right)
When photos surfaced of her disfigured abdomen, the actress came clean to People about her goofed stomach liposuction.
If these cautionary tales say anything, it's that plastic surgery is a serious decision -- and possibly one that should be preceded by professional counseling.
