The first time we met Olivia Palermo, she was the very picture of poise. Flawless, expensively dressed and sporting perpetually perfect hair, the self-described "social" welcomed Whitney to a world where invite-only dinner parties are the norm -- and Manolos are a dime a dozen.
But last week, we started wondering if we hadn't judged Olivia a bit too hastily.
Because, underneath the fancy, straight-outta-Vogue clothes, the smug stares and the halfhearted efforts to take Whitney under her wing, Olivia seemed a bit (dare we say it?!) threatened by Whit's arrival. And after tonight's episode of The City, we're thinking we might know why.
Quick recap: Who was that answering Whitney's phone -- and taking messages from Whitney's boyfriend -- while you-know-who jetted off to lunch with her cute colleague, Chris)? Olivia. Who was that standing there, seething, after Diane von Furstenberg bypassed her in favor of greeting her brand-new, California import? Olivia again.
And which DVF veteran was ordered to "assist" (i.e. answer to) her coworker of approximately five minutes on the Wonder Woman event? We'll give you one guess. (Hint: It rhymes with "Bolivia.")
+ Think Olivia's feeling a smidge insecure now that Whitney's arrived on the scene? Or is she just doing what all socials do: projecting confidence/utter indifference, keeping her friends close (and her frenemies closer) and glaring at anyone/everyone who failed to spend the better part of their adolescence as a deb?
