Although things didn't exactly work out between Lauren and her new boyfriend, Doug, tonight's episode of The Hills taught us a lot about the importance of letting someone down easy. Below, the easy 5-step guide to executing the perfect breakup, Hills-style!
Step 1. Convince yourself things are "moving too fast," even though the extent of your relationship involves dinner, brunch and ignoring him at a barbecue.
Step 2. Tell everyone you know (except your soon-to-be-ex-boyfriend!) that things just aren't working. You'll, of course, want to include that sketchy new girl you've only known for 3 months and your hottie ex-boyfriend.
Step 3. During your aforementioned conversations with Everyone You've Ever Met, you'll want to be sensitive to your new guy's feelings. Do this by repeatedly emphasizing that there's, like, zero chemistry, then sighing and saying "I just don't really want to settle."
Step 4. If you're planning a televised breakup, it's absolutely essential that you do it in person. Ideally, you'll want to set the scene by (a) catching the guy doing something losery -- like eating a romantic dinner for one! -- and (b) zooming in superclose on his crestfallen face at the EXACT moment you deliver the fatal blow. Make sure to wear your cutest outfit.
Step 5. Congratulations, you're officially single! Celebrate by awkwardly hugging your ex goodbye, flipping your hair and walking away to the ultimate breakup song: Tegan and Sara's "Call It Off." (So topical!!)
