Things have been a little slow on the MTV front today, so I'm taking the liberty of making jabs at our sister company's shows instead...
Dr. Drew Pinksy, addiction specialist to the stars and reality TV star in his own right, must be quite proud of himself for landing Rodney King and a whole new slew of washed up D-listers for next season's travesty of the mental health profession, VH1's Celebrity Rehab. According to the New York Post, the good-intentioned (?) doctor has gone a little overboard with his own God Complex and publicly diagnosed mega A-lister, Tom Cruise, as "deeply empty" and possibly "abused" as a child. Like, the Tom Cruise? That really powerful man in Hollywood who owns his own religion... a religion that believes psychiatrists should be eviscerated? Dr. Drew better watch his back yo, cuz Tom's lawyer has already fired off a no-nonsense response:
"This unqualified television performer who is obviously just looking for notoriety is so grotesquely unprofessional as to pretend to diagnose Tom and others without ever meeting them. He seems to be spewing the absurdity that all Scientologists are mentally ill..."
Sure, Tom Cruise certainly has demonstrated a lack of sanity in the past... but no one listens to him because he's not a DOCTOR. And for the most part, don't Scientologists keep their opinions to themselves? (I mean, aside from the "Psychiatry Kills" posters around LA.) How many times have you heard Tom telling inquiring minds to "just read the book"? (I mean, in his post-Lauer/Shields days.)
Not since Dr. Phil attempted to barge into Britney's manic breakdown has a doctor so bizarrely overstepped his bounds. Maybe Pinsky should take some of his own advice and come to believe that a Power greater than himself can restore him to sanity, then promptly make amends to the people he's harmed.
Dr. Drew's Diagnosis: Chronic Narcissistic Idiocy. Uh, in my humble and completely unqualified opinion.
Addendum: Real World: Hollywood's Joey did recently credit Dr. Drew for helping him get clean and sober, so maybe the dude's not all bad.
