‘Real World XX’ Already Tackling Racism

On this new season of Real World, racism is already playing a factor amongst the roommates. Check out the sneak peek of next week’s episode, in which Kimberly slings around the word “ghetto” (four times, to be exact) and coins a new term (”Blackville”). Yup yup, the South lives on…

It’s not like Kim’s language came out of the blue. Watch the controversial scene below that was cut from last night’s premiere, and check out more unseen footage at RealWorldDailies.com.

  1. Bradie Says:

OMG that was the most funny thing that i have ever heard. She went way too far. . .Come on I think that Kim went a little far.

  2. krystal Says:

lol that is funny… i dont think she was meaning black people, she was just meaning dont start trouble and make a scene like people do in the ghetto…that includes all races not just blacks…
I wish that black people would stop taking that word offensive cause if u look up the definition of ghetto it says nothing about black people ill even give you one ex: of the def…
ghetto: a quarter of a city in which Jews were formerly required to live

    so get over it

  3. black Says:

technical meaning or not, society strips the dictionary definition from a word and gives it a new connotation, and we all know good and damn well what she meant by ghetto.

  4. adrian Says:

I find it appalling that you all think she is not saying in a derogatory sense. The word ghetto in broad terms speak of people living in quarters deemed for the sub class. Like Jews and Blacks. When she said it, she meant it in the context of a lower person speaking toward her, and so she used that word. Not to mention Blackville, or is that a out of context word too. Racisim is alive and still just as strong in the US. It disgusts me that people find excuses for it. US need to rethink its social aspect to its country. You can go on criticizing other countries for their social problem, but except people like this as, “funny”.

  5. Tiffany Says:

First of all… to Max….. white people are not the only racist people out there!! There are just as many racist blacks, hispanic, chinese etc, etc. I have known some xtremely racist black people.
Secondly….. she was out of line. They both were in a way but kimberly more so than the other. What’s her name shouldnt have been throwing a fit about not getting her way. there are others in the house besides her. Kim just never should have said it and i automatically lost anykind of respect i might hav had for her. she seemed so friendly at first but i guess her true colors really came out fast!

  6. Sunny Says:

I agree with Tiffany anout losing respect for Kim. I thought she would’ve been pretty cool until I heard her say that. It really sucks that there are people that are stuck in the past- and I mean everyone- not just white people.

  7. Angel gibson Says:

well we all know what she meant by ghetto…. she would have not used that term with any other white cast members, the defition in the dicitionary is nothing like the way it is used in society it is used to degrate black people and what we have become in this country. The blaackville comment was ignorant and uncalled for. so in actuallity she is the “ghetto” one

  8. Shanna Says:

Oh, my goodness. Where is she from? “Your parents won’t cut you out of the will?”

It is evident she is from a completely different social setting than everyone else in the house.

You can tell the brunette girl was taken aback by her question, but quickly wrote it off.

  9. Cee Says:

Krystal please do not be naive to the situation this girl is from SC which in many parts are segregated. So she was definitely meaning “balck” and I as far as people in the ghetto are loud and belligrent is not true there are plenty of people who have been there all there life in do not act that way. I’m not from the ghetto, but when someone tries to belittle me they are gonna get what what’s coming to them. For the record the street term for “being ghetto” is acting low class. And unfortunately a lot of white people think that most blacks are low class. Also Adrian you are right racism comes in all shapes and colors, but it originated from caucasians. You can sleep on that!

  10. black mark Says:

these types of comment used to get on my nerves, but yall have to realize that we are raised up seperately, this chick is from South carolina, she is only expressing herself the way she was raised(she knows no other way)now i just think her parents’s did a horrible job thats all.she’s going to talk like that until someone corrects her and i suspect that will happen soon.and to think she wants a Entertainment tonight anchor, wow, whaat a bad start..she’s gonna live with this forever..

  11. jersey guy Says:

“ghetto” is a term that identify an urban community (majority black). From experience i lived in what people call “the ghetto” for over 7 years. So everyone that thinks that she didn’t mean it in a derogatory way should reevaluate themselves, because that was a statement of destruction. To say someone is being or acting “ghetto” is belittling that person. I know for sure, she wouldn’t had made it out of the “ghetto” if she would had said that to someone that was actually raised in/from “the ghetto”.

  12. jersey guy Says:

Hmm….”ghetto” is a term that identify an urban community (majority black). From experience i lived in what people call “the ghetto” for over 7 years. So everyone that thinks that she didn’t mean it in a derogatory way should reevaluate themselves, because that was a statement of destruction. 13. procoutios Says:

I am black and I don’t feel as if kimberly’s remarks are racist, or because of a person’s skin color, but more by the other person’s demeanor…she would tell someone not to act ghetto if they were mexican or white, if they were indeed acting “ghetto”.

  14. Liz Says:

I think that Kimberly really didn’t mean any harm by it. She seems like a VERY VERY sheltered southern white girl and is not around alot of African Americans to know when and when not to say things like that. Don’t get me wrong I totally disagree with what all she said in both videos. But you have to see it from her view as a sheltered girl. Plus she was probably a little drunk to. And maybe she felt her and Brianna were good enough friends that she could say things like that and she would not have gotten mad but she did. Now Kimberly knows and now maybe we won’t hear it from her anymore. We’ll just have to see what happens in the next episode. Remember I totally disagree with what she said it was totally wrong.

  15. mississippi Says:

The girl is racist….”All i know about detroit is it’s and inner city scary area” “dont go acting all ghetto” …explain to me how she isn’t already setting the tone for the show and type of person she is…

  16. Monica Says:

Who ever feels that Kim was not being racist is mistaken as a sheltered African American I was raised to know better than to belittle the children in my predominantly Caucasin city much less neighborhood. Being sheltered is not an excuse especially since I go to school in Columbia, South Carolina I know she has come in contact with people of other races and her remark was ment as a ‘black’ thing due to it relating to the sterotype of being loud. I feel sorry for this girl because she has hindered her way of life since no one will ever fully let this go.

  17. tiff Says:

omgshhh, her comments are ridiculous. ” I’m realy sorry we have really ghetto people in the house”… ” i dont care if youre from the most inner city blackville.” haha wowww, it’s obvious shes a veryy ignorant person, and shes making fool of heself on national television.

  18. Joe ( Country Boy ) Says:

I have to say that I completely agree with Kim. Bri was throwing a fit about nothing, she thinks the world bows at her feet. And for all the talk about racism, face it, it’s out there. It is not Kim’s fault she was raised up in it. I come from the country like Kim and I see a lot of racism, between blacks, whites, and hispanics. I for one can say I am not racist, I hate a bunch of black people, and I hate a bunch of white people, probobly more whites, but I’ve made those decisions to disslike those people after I got to know them.

  19. Leah Says:

It’s amazing that in 2008 in an America in which racism “doesn’t exist” it continues to rear it’s ugly head. To say the least I was highly offended by the trash that came out of Kim’s mouth…I mean seriously it reflected the racist trash that was instilled in her. Take me back to 1968 when people didn’t pretend to like each other but they really let their feelings be known and it wasn’t hidden behind smiles and giggles and all that random perfect world stuff.

  20. Jessica Neely Says:

Kimberly over stepped the line!!! She used GHETTO way to many times. I think she is racist and her true beliefs showed through. When she said go find your pole…that was it for me. She is on my BAD list!! If I was Bre I woulda kicked her BUTT!! Yeah if you fight you get kicked off, but there is always the reunion! Can’t wait to see what Kimberly has to say for herself!

  21. megg Says:

I can’t believe that sentence would come out of her mouth. I will repeat it for those who forgot how ignorant it sounded…”I dont care if you’re from the most inner-city blackville”. For someone who doesnt know or understand what people who come from the inner city or anywhere else besides the small sheltered town she grew up in deal with, she has no right to sound off on what reactions are necessary in what situation. Racism is still alive in America but whats far worse is the extreme ignorance that breeds it.

  22. latoya Says:

we all know what she meant by ghetto…especially when she said blacksville…what the heck…and for everyone who said they thought the comment was funny…that’s a problem! Even SArah was trying to get her to censor her comments while on camera!

  23. PDidda Says:

Beyond the whole ghetto thing, which was slightly appalling-it became irrelevant when the ‘Blackville’ commentary came out. Yep, she represented for the South alright, and made it obvious, loud and clear, that that North/South mentality lives on. She was out of line with the Blackville comment, and I hope everything that comes her way afterwards is a lesson in how to change her ways. Because if anyone needs some education, it’s by far Kim-not Brianna. What a sad, ignorant little girl.

  24. tay Says:

I think she was so ignorant for those little remarks and i also don’t believe it was funny. if i was bri i wouldn’t accept her apology. because she was over the line.and i believe it was very racist.

  25. Kara Says:

Kimberly is a jerk! Bri was only pissed because she couldn’t entertain company in the house like everyone else…seemed like a logical argument, but then she’s told to not act “ghetto”. Even tho the ghetto does refer to a place, we all know that in America it refers to Black people. She’s ignorant and defintely needs to take a course in diversity. Her comment about Blackville was crossing the line. NO MORE RESPECT FOR KIM!

  26. kitkat31 Says:

Kim has already said some very offensive things regarding “urban people”(which typically refers to black people) within just the first two episodes. As a Black woman I am very proud of Breanna for not really going off on her but how far is to far? Even her apology was half hearted and fake(to me). There are some deep seeded stereotypes within her that need to be addressed professionally.

  27. lauren Says:

she uses racist terms WAYYY to much. its so sad. i have never heard a white girl say so many racist things in so little time. like SERIOUSLY its only the second episode and shes making herself look dumb as hell. It just shows how poorly she was raised..its sad that im a 17 year old white girl and i know A LOT more about respecting people than she does..

  28. Sarah Says:

What Kimberly said was so out of line. Kimberly is a naive southern girl who lives in her own little world. And where the hell is “blackville”. Basically Kimberly said that Brianna needed to not be ghetto, (which african american is part of her culture) and act normal. So what is normal in your eyes Kimberly??

  29. aboogie Says:

Honestly…KIM has crossed the line. That was so ignorant and unnecessary. BLACKVILLE, though? what the f*** was that?? Whether Bri crossed the line or not that was ridiculous. And as far as using the term ghetto…ignorant as well…if her and Bri had to settle something she could have came at her with so many other insulting words rather than choosing one that is FREQUENTLY used to describe “black” behavior. I’m not surprised that something like this happened but the sad thing about it is that there are so many other people that think like this…and I will tell you this right now. if KIM’S incompetent ass ever makes it to e! I will never ever support her and i hope you read this KIM….you F***ED UP!!!

  30. Lauren Says:

Whether it was intentional or not, Kim has made herself to appear to be complete and utter ignorant fool. All respect for her is gone and for those who condone her actions. I would assume that since she is not of the ghetto, she has access to various forms of media that would prove that not all Black people live in a ghetto, or behave in “ghetto” manners.

  31. Toot Says:

Excuse me but to me the word “ghetto” depicted in a negative aspect offends me as well as many others. Her comments should not be considered okay because they were meant to hurt and anger someone. Furthermore, she went on to show her prejudice by making racial comments like, “blackville”! Come on people you know that was not appropriate. If you think saying hurtful things like that, than you are IGNORANT and ignorance is bliss.

  32. Lisa Says:

Kim is ignorant and condescending. There’s no excuse for what she said and how she acted. I grew up in the south just like she did and I see ignorant people like her all the time, she disgusts me… I hope she doesn’t run into some truly “ghetto” people because after what she said she better watch her back… By the way, she’ll never make it as an entertainment reporter with that mindset.

  33. Annemarie Says:

Kim was completely out of line. She said “I don’t care what blackville your from…” WTH!! She is racist and anyone who can’t see that is ridiculous.

  34. Sarah Says:

And by the way, did you see the look of disgust on Kimberly’s face when she said blackville? She might as well have just spit in Brianna’s face.. Terrible

  35. KiKi Says:

I think that she went to far because of the fact she sounded really ignorant and didnt think before she spoke. she went to far saying stop acting “ghetto”…why couldnt she say stop acting rude or Why are you getting loud or something other than a term that she knows was out of order. she also stated “i dont care where in the inner city “blackville”…r u serious?!?!? how rude is that…that shows the type of character you are and Kim sounds very uneducated and if she didnt mean it they way people like me are taken it maybe she needs to learn to think before she speaks cuz personally i would flipped and knock her out for real!!!…BRi was out of order but the comments was not called for because they’re many words out there… lets be real!! They making comments on her clothes and %~$# … not just strippers would wear that type of clothes like ….they are very closed minded and need to step outside of what they have learned and been around because if you wanna make it in the world they come from they need to learn how to adjust to other people and understand the world around them and know that people are not gonna think like them !!

  36. USC Girl Says:

I agree with Monica. I go to the University of South Carolina, which is located in Columbia, SC. That is Kimberly’s hometown. I am so embarrassed by what she said, and my mouth actually dropped open when she said what she did. She could have said a lot of other things to diffuse the situation with insults or making herself look bad, but she chose to automatically jump to the “ghetto”, “stripper”, “Blackville” comments and I think that she 100% meant every word. Drinking is usually when people’s true emotions are let out. She could have said let’s not get angry or out of control or even lets all compromise. But she didn’t and I have lost respect for her for her comments and behavior. She should be ashamed and so should her family. Maybe she didn’t really truly mean it, but she said it and now her actions have to speak louder than her words!!!!

  37. Danielle Says:

ok first of all lets be honest the only ghetto one in the house was kim. Brianna did not get loud with kim when she came out of the house. Kim off rip starts hollering about being ghetto. Then she tries to say well Bri said she gets ghett when she gets mad. Maybe she should find out what getting ghetto is before she goes poppin off at the mouth. She is a racist. Let’s be honest then she was talking to the other girl about inner-city blackville?!?! Is this chick for real?!? People say what is really on their minds when they are drunk. I doubt this is the last time the she will forget she is on Tv and show her true colors. Buts lets remember racist people should not be honored by being allowed on great follow-up shows like THE GAUNTLET

  38. Brian Says:

I had to watch it again for a second time Her comments are even more unbelievable the 2nd time around. 1st Kimberly using the term Ghetto and then I don’t care is shes from “blackville” It is so clearly ridiculous and ignorant its crazy. Also Kimberly was the aggressor. Briana was not confronting her specifically. Kimberly actually walked up to her and said wait don’t get ghetto and said it 3 more times. I think Briana was genuinely shocked. Wow that was pretty incredible to see that unfold.

  39. Ashley Says:

There are no excuses for racism.

  40. Reem Says:

Her comment, “Blackville” explains it all. There are no excuses for her remarks and actions. Example, if she had pulled out a gun and shot Bri, would her background be an excuse?

  41. G.E. Says:

Ok, Kim needs to educate herself. Her comments toward and about black people are WAY over the top. “Blackville”, I guess that’s what she and her friends @ home call the black community. Go and read a book and find out how ghetto was the man who invented the traffic light was or air conditioning(Which I know her family has been enjoying for years!). And if her family would cut her out of the will because she dated a black man then I see why she has these feelings towards blacks. I’m sure she won’t be voting for OBAMA! And Bri should keep her head up and don’t let ignorance hold her back!!!!!

  42. Michelle Says:

Are you kidding me? That girl (Kim) will never make it as an entertainment reporter with that mindset or that accent (can’t stand her voice).

  43. Lee Lee Says:

wow. i have lost all respect for kim at this point. “blackville?” grow the hell up..

  44. Eileen Says:

I think its disgusting that we live in a society where black people seem to be the only people allowed to justly call the shots on who’s being racist or ignorant. Of all these comments, there seems to be no single clear definition on the word “Ghetto”. That’s because it has evolved into a very loose slang term. There are consequences to that: no two people will have the same definition for the word. If someone uses that word, it can therefore mean a wide variety of things. I am a 22 year old white female. I have lived in Chicago, IL for four years, two years I worked in a hardware store where I was the only white person. I, along with the rest of my black cooworkers, used the word “ghetto” on a daily basis. For the first time watching this episode was it brought to my attention that there are people who exist that believe that word is race oriented. I was born white and I have every right as any other American to be called “ghetto”. Who segregated it to blacks only? Who called the shots on what it meant? Whoever it was, they were both ignorant and racist. I believe it was an ignorant racist black person, not Kim.

  45. Neal Says:

Ok maybe some people will see it as racism however as an African American living in America people should be able to say whatever they want. U want to say a racist remark be my guest if anything im not gonna loose respect for a person im going to give that person respect for having the balls to say what they are thinking its not a big deal remember people “sticks and stones”

  46. letloverule Says:

Kim is really rude and ignorant. “Ghetto” and “blackville?” What the heck? She needs to watch her mouth or just shut it for all I care!

  47. Naiya Says:

Personally, I find it very offensive to hear white people use the term “ghetto”. Most have never even seen a ghetto or lived that lifestyle. So for them to use it, whether it be in play or in a deragatory way, angers me. Until you know what it is like to live in the ghetto, real places where people barely survive due to harsh living circumstances, don’t use terms that you know nothing about. And to throw it out there like there is a certain behavior associated with the term is just plain ignorance. When white peole get loud and crazy or act out in angry ways, they are just having a fit or throwing a tantrum. But if black people do it, we are called “ghetto”, a term used to be demeaning and degrading to a whole race of people. Stop the ignorance, people. It just makes you appear uninformed and silly. And we have EVERY right to be angry at being called ghetto from a race that knows nothing about a “ghetto” way of life. Those same “ghetto” people are people that make it no matter what life has to throw at them unlike other lifestyles of people I seem to come across. Kimberly girl is obviously another ignorant, misinformed, hypocritical, prejudice person. There, I’ve let go of some of my steam…thanks MTV!

  48. Keena Says:

It’s really not funny, it actually quite sad. The show has definitely lived up to its too it’s potential of displaying the real world. I have no doubt that Kim is a good and kindhearted girl, however she is also a bigot. Her comments were completely real to her. Sarah put it best the point wasn’t that he was black, but that she has a boyfriend. “Your parents won’t cut you out the will…” clues into how Kim was raised. However in tonights espiode Kim displayed more ignorance with her comments than Bri did in her emotional outburst. Kim if you are still pursuing journalism then you need to get a reality check so that you will be objective in your reporting. Thus far in my opinion your ignorance has surpassed all of the other cast memembers behavior.

  49. mandy Says:

wow i bet Kimberly really wishes they had edited that atrocity out. now the whole world knows how highly self involved, ignorant, small minded, and uncultured she truly is and proving the southern stereotype. I didn’t like her from the beginning i can’t stand girls that say “love you” after two days of knowing me…FAKE! way to bring down other females of all colors and creeds. instead of talking behind her back about what a whore she is and lecturing her about her life cause of her occupation to her face you shoulda just minded your business! you didn’t mean it cause you’re fake.

  50. shani Says:

Her comments brought me to tears because I tell people all the time about stuff like this and they say it’s rare. No it isn’t! There are plenty of people with those views out there. It sucks because when I get upset im considered ghetto when someone else does they are considered upset.I have a nine year old who is naturally loud when he’s excited but I tell him everyday to lower his voice or people will think bad things about him. Kim if this is how you and your friends and family talk about black people. keep it at home and please dont reproduce. We don’t need you contaminating the rest of the world.I feel like im in the civil rights movement and it 2008. this is rediculous. Kim you have offended alot of people with your comments.Put yourself im bri’s shoes how uld you feel about people judging you and grinning in your face afterwards?
