Our special guest-blogger, Mrs. Weiss, will be giving advice each week on how to become a hot-stuff journalist like the students on The Paper staff.
Lesson No. 1: Rack Your Brain
Brainstorm for ideas by reading local and national news, and then figure out how it relates to your school. Childhood obesity, energy-drink dangers, baggy pants law, immigration, the presidential election. Yes, it does all connect to teens! While it’s important to cover events at your school, think past the annual talent show and the latest pep rally. Cover those AND MORE. Think about trends –- and that doesn’t just mean fashion or music. Being politically aware is a trend. Use and overuse of technology is a trend. Businesses’ closing, reducing the number of jobs for teens, is a trend. Stories are everywhere; all you need to do is find them.

Hey, Mrs. Weiss? There shouldn’t be an apostrophe in “businesses,” at least not in that context. From one “hot stuff journalist” to another.
The show is really fun, though! Finally, MTV portrays kids that care about accomplishing something of substance. No, “earning” a disgustingly lavish party and tricked-out car for your 16th — simply because of your status as a spoiled brat — is not an accomplishment. So, great job on this new show!
