Pageant Place: Recap: Episode 4
Together Again!

The fight for Tila Tequila

Last week we learn that the main duty of beauty queens is to judge other beauty queens. Whether its official (Riyo judging the Miss Indonesia pageant; Rachel judging the Turks and Caicos pageant) or unofficial (Rachel judging Katie; Rachel and Katie judging Tara), these queens are experts at throwing stones in glass houses. We also learn that nobody, and that’s NOBODY, calls Katie a teeny bopper. Of course, calling her Miss Teen Burpy Belcherson is totally fair game.

Rachel and Katie get ready in the morning after their big fight. Katie is still upset about Rachel calling her a teeny bopper, and she thinks Rachel is stuck up, arrogant, and full of herself, because, well, Rachel is stuck up, arrogant, and full of herself. Tara comes over to get the girls out of the apartment, and she acknowledges the tension between her and Katie. “There’s a lot of pretending between Katie and I…There’s a lot of things I’d like to discuss.”

Katie and Rachel are off to a charity event at the Gay Men’s Health Crisis Center, where it appears that they are doing charity kitchen prep work. Rachel offers to do the dishes and Katie peels carrots. Rachel doesn’t think Katie has ever worked a day in her life since being crowned Miss Teen USA. Rachel says that she’s worked every day of her life: “It does the body good.” So now we can add demeaning to Rachel’s list of attributes.

After the charity event we get a new insight into Katie and Josh’s relationship: they only see each other once every 2 weeks and no more than 2 and half weeks. Wait, what? Don’t they live in the same city? Why do I feel like that is more Josh’s doing than Katie’s?

Anyhow, Riyo is back and Katie bought her a tee shirt. It’s pink and cute and I’m sure Riyo will love it. Katie also buys Josh a few shirts. I hate when people buy me clothes, ESPECIALLY tee shirts, Josh doesn’t like anyone of them. He thinks the orange tie-dyed shirt “almost a little gay for me.” Hey Josh, I’ve got news for you, dating a pageant queen is kind of gay.

In two weeks Katie is going to Pasadena to crown the next Miss Teen USA. During lunch the girls talk about Katie’s post-pageantry life. Katie’s not starting college right away because it’s too late to start freshman year, but she has things in the works that she’s not going to talk about. Rachel keeps prying. “Singing and acting?” Katie basically acknowledges that she wants to be in entertainment, and that she’s not ruling out being a singer. Rachel’s mind is blown. “I’ve heard Katie Sign…hey, technology’s great.” Why is Rachel such a B*tch? Also, what’s wrong with using technology? The new Britney Spears album is great, and there is not one human voice on the entire thing.

Katie rides home from the restaurant with Josh. She talks about being perfectly happy as a clueless 19 year-old, and that she’s sick of people asking her about her future. She clearly has no idea that being pestered about your future is part of the teenage experience. Josh thinks Rachel is jealous. “She wants to be Oprah.” I think Josh might be mistaking self-worshipping egomania with jealousy (Before I get a lot of Oprah fanatics sending me hate mail, I want to make clear that I love Oprah, but also that I’m not going to act like Oprah doesn’t also love Oprah).

Back at Pageant Place, Tara and Rachel are lying on the bed and talking about Katie. Rachel is upset about Katie’s debased cleanliness, and she doesn’t think their fight the previous day was civilized. Tara thinks Katie wants to be treated like an adult, but that she also likes to fall back on the ‘I’m only 19-years-old’ excuse. “My biggest advice,” says Tara “is to just talk to her about it.” Rachel, picking up on the Tara/Katie tension responds, “Perhaps you should take your own advice.” I really hate Rachel.

The next day Tara calls Katie to set up a talk time to hash things out on camera. Katie doesn’t want to go through the confrontation all over again, but she agrees to meet Tara and goes to the apartment with one empty iced coffee and one full iced coffee.

I’ve been waiting for the Tara Vs. Katie duel all season, but it isn’t that dramatic. ”We can let this thing ride out,” starts Tara, “but I would rather just get everything out in the open.” Katie starts to cry a little, but Tara, being the ranking queen, starts sobbing. She cries about the media, and how she was locked in the apartment before rehab, and that now she’s only known for being the Miss USA who went to rehab. How can she ever forgive Katie, but without Katie she wouldn’t be eight months sober? Tara comes to the only logical conclusion: “Even though you’re a bitch I love you with all my heart.” Tara is a class act.

Finally we get some Riyo time. She goes to her English language instructor. Today’s lesson: idioms. Now, it’s been a while since I took grammar class, but I guess idioms are just informal expressions. I’ve heard that English expressions are what make the learning the language so difficult. The first idiom is “[blank] is a good egg,” the last is “cool as a cucumber.” Put those two idioms together on top of some romaine lettuce and you’ve got a nifty salad.

Meanwhile, Katie is trying on dresses to prepare for the Pasadena pageant. She doesn’t like any of the dresses; some look too much like Paris Hilton, while others just don’t suit her personality. The wardrobe workers think she’s handling the situation like a 19-year-old, and they especially don’t appreciate the big belch that Katie lets out during the fitting. Katie defends herself by claiming to have a stomach problem, but the wardrobe ladies don’t buy it. “It’s one of the most intrusive things you can do in a public setting.”

Excuse me while I rant for a second. I burped like Katie for 3 years of my life. I went to doctor after doctor, and eventually they found out that I have severe gastro-esophageal reflux disease (GERD) which caused ulcers to form up and down my esophagus. I had to have major internal surgery, I dropped down to 120 pounds (I’m 5’10’’), and I still have dietary restrictions. The moral of this story is that belching is all fun and games until someone winds up with a week in the hospital, half a stomach, and an esophagus full of ulcers. She should consider getting an endoscopy.

When Katie gets home she talks with Riyo about her future. Riyo understands that Katie is just a teen who doesn’t know what she wants. When Riyo entered the pageant she knew that she wanted to be a dancer and have a dance school, but Katie was too young to be that focused. Katie doesn’t want to go to college, and instead just wants to go back to Texas, see her family, and get to know Katie. “You’re a good egg, Katie Blair,” Riyo says, putting those English lessons to good use.

Katie and Tara are having lunch at an outdoor café. They mock a body building woman who walks by, which is rude and catty, but also totally funny. “Not a good look!” They also have paparazzi taken their photos. They think it’s rude at first, but then they laugh and have fun with them. Looks like the dynamic duo is back.

Next week, it’s goodbye to both Katie’s reign and Katie’s boy.

Pageant Place is the WORST reality TV show ever made. What I disagree most with is the fact that the pageant industry is misrepresented. Those of us who have actually been involved with pageants know that girls like Katie Blair and Tara Conner should not be in the role modeling positions that they hold (or held). They are the bad apples that give pageant participants a bad name. The vast majority of women who win titles and are successful in the higher levels of pageants are not immature bratty drama queens like those on this show. We all know Donald Trump is only out to make more money from this TV show but please, have a conscience and give young girls who look up to these role models something positive to influence their lives. This is another example of why image problems run rapid in our country while respect for oneself and others has plummeted.

And foreigners wonder why Americans are so selfish…way to go MTV.

This episode was a really big step for tara. Me and Tara had a lot incommon, I was addicted to cocaine and herion. I was addicted to drugs for four years, i am now seventeen and have eiht months sober. When i was watching this episode it made me cry seeing tara confront katie. I know how big of a deal it is to confront that person. I am extremly happy to see tara make the step in this way, becuase when she said that she would probably have been dead by now, i would have to if i didnt make the right choices. I am a big fan for tara and always will be

    i love pageant place!

  4. Gcela Says:

i’m glad katie is gone and i just wish Tara was gone 2. These two are the worst example of what a role model should be. Tara & katie should be hanging around Paris, Lindsey & Britney they would get along just fine they are all the same. What a shame. Anyway… So, Riyo and Rachel r great they’re not only beautiful but they have a brain and they r mature. I hope the new miss teen is the opposite of katie. I’m sure she will be fine, or at least she better be since that question about paris, britney and nicole being the worst role models won her the crown.. well, we have 2 wait & see…

  5. Lolli Says:

Hahaha this is the best recap article yet! I’m glad everyone’s as disgusted by Rachel as I am. Not that the other girls are anything to look up to, but at least they are who they are and don’t talk out of both sides of their mouths. Rachel pretends to be this role model, mature, respectable girl when she needs to be (i.e. interviews, around the Donald, appearances, etc.) but when they’re all around the apartment together, her true colors show. I think Rachel’s bitchiness has really shocked even some of her biggest fans, and she’s lost a lot of support since this show started. If she’s so intelligent, then why the hell would she be so blatantly arrogant and condescending while the cameras are rolling? She’s done some serious self-sabotage, and I think her image has taken a 180 since she was crowned.

  6. erika Says:

i love pagent place.. think its sooo funny.. rachel is gettig om my nervs but i love katie

  7. Kris Says:

I hope this means that KB is getting rid of that Josh for good. He is a loser who does not udnerstand or respect the fact that she has a life outside of him. He is manipulative. DOWN WITH JOSH!

  8. Karen Says:

I had to write in about this show because I am so angered by it. The girls on this show are just plain mean. When you are a pageant winner, aren’t you supposed to be a good, well-rounded person with ethics and morals? These girls on this show are nothing like what they represent on stage - NOTHING like it. They are mean to one another, they talk about each other behind the other’s back, they make really self-centered, rude and rather gross comments. Is this what Miss Teen America and Miss USA, etc….is this the kind of behavior these pageants want to be known for? Honestly, I’ve never seen such prima donnas representing the United States…what a joke these pageants are. What happened to being proud of representing the USA? Whatever happened to good girls who respect others? Are they all gone? Not everyone in America wants to see this kind of crap on TV…and I think by airing this show, you are showing all young girls that it is o.k. to act like this and still get everything you want. Selfish girls. This is not reality. I am a 32 year old wife with no children yet…shows like this make me just want to say NO. Disgusting.

  9. Olympia Says:

Give Rachel a break, if u lived with sum1 who dosent clean up after themselves as well as burps all the time, u’ll probably be a lil bitchy. Calling KB a teeny bopper was outta line, I admit. But when she asks KB about her plans after her rein, Rachel does have a point. How can u look forward to a singing career and cant sing. Rachel is a great role model, look at her accomplishments in her bio. Riyo is too. as for KB, she growing up, and she represents what it means to be a teen, I luv em all. And come on the worst show CHRIS.LMAO, making Munedo is, MTV had worst than Pageant Place.

  10. Avery Says:

I think the show was both fun, carefree and lacking. It gave the world a sneak peek into the highly coveted world of tiaras and lip-gloss with heavy character manipulation.

Though regardless of MTV’s attempt to dramatize and make these girls seem like clueless caricatures, they are not. One girl struggled with drugs and drinking, another is dealing with western culture, this show could be an expose on todays youth but it has made these young women seem caddy and socially vapid.I mean MTV, had some stark material here but made it fodder.

With the emergence of bi racial,(Mexican and German) Hilary Carol Cruz, I am hoping the show will take itself to another level. Miss Teen 2007’s experience could be a great spring broad to show girls that you can be both mixed, smart and still have intelligence. She radiated on the stage during the Miss Teen USA pagent and she still does on Pagent Place.

2 Kudos and a big Hurrah to Hilary Carol Cruz!

  11. Ginni Says:

Last night was the first episode I’ve seen. I think Hilary Cruz is the one to watch.
I can’t blame her for being frustrated with the Miss South Carolina mess. That girl was pretty but her “15 minutes” are up! Hilary is the winner. She has the title and the international exposure and composure to be a real role model for young women.

  12. BEE Says:

NICOLE: I AM SO SO PROUD OF YOU. CONGRATS! I KNOW ALOT OF RECOVERING ADDICTS AND YOU ARE SHOWING SUCH COURAGE AND GRACE. JUST REMEMBER YOUR ONLY HERE FOR A SHORT LIFE TIME AND DRUGS WILL ALWAYS EXSIST YOU WON’T SO DON’T EVER DO THEM AGAIN. DON’T LET THEM STEAL YOUR EXPIERENCES, THEY WILL STEAL SO MANY OTHER SOULS IN YOUR LIFE TIME. BE ABOVE THAT FOREVER, AND EVERYDAY REACH OUT LIKE YOUR DOING. IT IS AN INSPIRATION THAT YOUR WINNING THE FIGHT AGAINST A DEMON THAT POSSES PEOPLE IN SECRET. BRING THAT DEMON INTO THE LIGHT, TAKE AWAY ITS POWER AND SAVE SOMEONE FROM THE SHAME AND GUILT BY SHINNING THROUGH. LOVE AND RESPECT. -BEE

  13. Sarah Says:

give rachel a break. i know that if i lived with two other girls then i wouldn’t nice and cheerful to them 24/7. and i can’t imagine that many others would be either. it’s natural to get fed up with roommates and just because these three women are beauty queens does not mean they don’t get mad or fed up with eachother. it would be weird if a girl was happy and upbeat all the time…people would probably say that she was being fake. unlike most people on reality tv, these women did not necessarily sign up for this show–they were forced into it because of their titles. give all of these women a break and try to put yourself in their shoes: how would you be portrayed on tv? it’s just not fair to judge these women, or anyone else for that matter, based on eight 30 minute episodes that barely skim the surface of who these women really are and that they do.

  14. jessica Says:

I know this is an odd question… but does anyone know what watch katie blair has…? The white leather one. I’m dying to know!

  15. Christina Says:

I love pageant place! It is such an awesome show and I am so glad everyone is friends again. I tought me a lesson and I am Taras biggest fan ever!!She is a great role model and I glad that they let her go to rehab and they even brought back to be their “manager”. She is my role model because after Katie was mean (even though it ended up being a good think) and she was on the taploids for a long time and people gave her mean names and everything she still pulled through to be sober (for how long now??) well anyways she is very healthy now and is this most beautiful of all the girls. I love everyone accept JOSH HE IS SO STUPID!!!!!!!! I love tara and I hope she goes a long healthy life. I will always look up to her.

  16. lira Says:

pageant place is a pathetic reality show. Those ladies in there are insecure and their mouth is full of hate!!!! those ladies there think that they are really beautiful becasue they won the title but in reality their attitudes are trashy. They are envious, jealous and insecure about everything . They should stop this reality show because it only showing that they are bad examples for teens especially of the attitudes that they are showing to the world!!!

  17. jane Says:

It was one thing for Trump to be supportive of Tara when she was trashed in the media. But the way his organization has treated the winners like they lost and the blonde girls like he’s dating them or something is rediculous. Rachel is mature and elegant and is not getting a fair run of her time as Miss USA. Trump comes off extremely superficial and i don’t think he’s looking for the most poised, best all around woman. He’s looking for a young version of his first wife to kiss his ass.

  18. philly Says:

Well I’d like to give a man’s perspective here.

I understand exactly what Donald is doing. You can bet that the decision to bring Miss Teen South Carolina to the VMA’s and to New York to upstage the winner Hillary Cruz, was his alone and motivated by all the web hits that Miss Teen South Carolina received. A brilliant marketing strategy that could also make for some interesting TV.

However, while I understand it I certainly disagree, and I think that this marketing strategy may be counter productive in the long
run and bound to produce needless tension among the winners. I think that it may make winning these crowns less valuable in the future to the participants.

I have faith that Hillary Cruz will handle the challenges of her reign with grace and dignity.

Rachel’s situation is different however, as Tara is supposed to protect the pagent winners and promote the Miss Universe organization at the same time. I understand both girls dilemma and have empathy for both. I believe that these two can find a compromise that will work for both of them.

  19. Brittany Says:

i was completly shocked when i read tc n kb made up i would never be able to forgive someone when they said i was a grugy even if it was true i would like to hit rock bottom firt and RELIZE i NEED help other than someone forcing me to notice it and rachek needs to calm her hormones because shes becoming a ~#*?? i though she was the best but shes just a b****y as the rest riyo is my favorite(ROCK N RIYO)

  20. Mom on the Plains Says:

I am so confused. You get on the MU site and read the link about their organization and it is just one big contradiction from what Pageant Place portrays. Mr Trumps self promotion is just plain tacky. The kiss on the lips of Tara was NASTY. My daughter won her state teen division and went to nationals very proud to represent her state as a role model for young women. After watching this show, I think it just a huge misrepresentation of what they say this organization is all about. I feel sorry for the State Directors because they are taking these girl’s and their family’s money. It is not cheap to enter a state pageant let alone win one. How do you promote this “the titleholders of the Miss Universe Organization personify the combination of beauty and intelligence that defines the 21st Century”, after watching this show? I see declining numbers at the state level and women who are really interested in empowering women moving to the Miss America system.
